The flip side, however, is that Northern Virginia experiences the worst traffic congestion in the Commonwealth. It is consistently ranked among the top five most congested regions in the US.
Traffic congestion produces a number of negative effects:
- Longer and unpredictable travel times on roadways and transit
- Higher costs of doing business
- Increased fuel consumption
- Poor air quality
- Overcrowded buses, railcars, and station platforms
- Unreliable transit services
Economic vitality in our region depends on an effective transportation network. So does delivering the quality of life that attracts and retains the highly qualified workforce that fuels the region’s growth.
To improve conditions, the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA), is developing and updating TransAction, the long-range transportation plan for Northern Virginia, with goals to enhance mobility, increase accessibility and improve resiliency by planning for an equitable, sustainable and safe multimodal transportation network. NVTA’s in-depth planning process has resulted in a draft TransAction Plan which addresses regional transportation needs through 2045 and is comprised of 429 candidate transportation projects totaling more than $75 billion. The plan identifies potential investments to meet the growing needs for travel throughout the region, expanding beyond Northern Virginia. The draft TransAction Plan and draft Project List are now open for public comment.
